What the calculation includes
By ferry
The return ferry for your family and your car, fuel, tolls, tunnels and vignettes to the port (in France or Italy), and if you wish a cabin and a hotel night before boarding. The calculator recommends the best-value crossing from where you live. Without a car: the ferry on foot and the train or coach to the port.
By plane
The best real ticket price found for your route, getting to the departure airport (train or bus, or parking) and your chosen way from the arrival airport to your town: hire car, pre-booked taxi, shuttle or family picking you up.
Ferry, fuel and car hire prices are averages observed by season. They are there to compare both options, not to replace the exact price, which you'll see when you click through to the offers.

Your questions
How reliable are the prices?
The flight price is the best real price found for your route and month, updated several times a day. Ferry, fuel and car hire prices are 2026 averages, checked on operator and booking websites. The final price is always the one on the site where you book.
Why is the ferry often cheaper for families?
When flying, everyone pays for a ticket and luggage, and you need a hire car there, which is expensive in July and August. On the ferry you take your own car and as much luggage as the boot can hold. The bigger the family and the longer the stay, the better the ferry looks.
I'm travelling without a car: does the calculator still work?
Yes. Choose "I'm travelling without a car": the calculator then compares the ferry on foot, with a train or coach to the port, against flying. For the arrival, you choose: a hire car, a pre-booked taxi, a shuttle to the hotel (when flying) or family picking you up.
Which crossing from Germany, Switzerland or Italy?
From Switzerland, Germany, Austria and northern Italy, Genoa is usually the best balance. From Rome, Civitavecchia; from Naples, Salerno; from Sicily, Palermo. The calculator automatically picks the best-value crossing from your city, depending on the month.
What papers do I need to take my car on the ferry?
A valid passport for every passenger including children, the original vehicle registration document and insurance valid in Tunisia (green card). On arrival, a 3-month circulation permit is issued for the car. If it isn't in your name, bring the owner's written authorisation.
When should I book?
For flights, the best time is usually 2 to 3 months before departure. For a summer ferry, book as soon as sales open: CTN usually opens summer bookings in December of the year before (December 2025 for summer 2026), and the good dates go fast.
Can I send the result to my family?
Yes. Below the result, the WhatsApp button sends a summary with a link that reopens exactly the same calculation. The site also remembers your last choices on your device.
Is the site free?
Yes. Some buttons are affiliate links: if you book after clicking, the booking site may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn't influence the calculation, which always shows you the cheapest option.
